  • Famous for: Having been crowned in 1952, Elizabeth II is one of the longest reigning British monarchs ever. She is also one of the longest serving heads of state in the world and is known for her love of equestrianism and dogs, particularly her Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

    • Royal duties: William is the eldest son of Prince Charles of Wales, who is first in line to the throne, and the late Princess Diana. Having been made a Counsellor of State aged 21, William carries out a number of state functions and visits on behalf of his grandmother, The Queen and is patron of a large number of charities. He is President of the English Football Association.
    • Famous for: Like his late mother, William is an avid supporter of humanitarian causes. He is a keen polo player and a trained search and rescue helicopter pilot, having reached the rank of flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force.

      • Name at birth: Catherine Elizabeth Middleton
      • Place in the line of succession: N/A
      • Royal duties: Kate Middleton is the fiancee of Prince William and, following their wedding, will either be known as Princess William of Wales or become a Duchess should William be given a Dukedom.
      • Famous for: Kate met William while they were both studying at St. Andrews University in Scotland, and the pair shared a house together. Kate famously has no 'royal blood' and is the daughter of a former British Airways flight officer Michael Middleton and former flight attendant Carole Elizabeth (née Goldsmith). Her parents founded a party supplies company in 1987 and subsequently became millionaires.

        • Place in the line of succession: N/A
        • Royal duties: As husband and consort of the Queen, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh accompanies the monarch in her state and ceremonial duties. During Elizabeth's coronation Philip was not crowned, but instead knelt before the Queen, with her hands around his, and swore to be her "liege man of life and limb".
        • Famous for: Phillip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families, but was exiled from Greece as a child. He has caused controversy in the past for making various remarks that have been deemed as racially intolerant.

          • Royal duties: As the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles is the heir to the British throne and is set to become King upon his mother's death. He is a Counsellor of State and carries out a number of official duties on behalf of the Queen. He holds a seat in the House of Lords (the upper house of the British Parliament) and founded the charitable Prince's Trust in 1976.
          • Famous for: Charles is known for his interest in the built environment and organic farming, and formed his own upmarket food company Duchy Originals in 1990, the profits from which go to the Prince's Trust. He married Lady Diana Spencer in a lavish ceremony in 1981, before controversially divorcing her in 1996 after he was accused of having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, who became his second wife in 2005.

            • Place in the line of succession: N/A
            • Royal duties: Diana became Princess of Wales when she married Prince Charles in 1981, and had been expected to become Queen when he was eventually crowned King, until the pair divorced in 1996. She is the late mother of Princes William and Harry.
            • Famous for: Diana was known for her charity work, particularly her support of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. She tragically died along with her companion Dodi Fayed in a 1997 car crash following a high speed chase involving a photographer in Paris. Her death caused an unprecedented outpouring of grief both in Britain and the world at large.

              • Place in the line of succession: N/A
              • Royal duties: The Duchess of Cornwall is the second wife of Prince Charles, and therefore also holds the title of Princess of Wales. She accompanies Charles in his official obligations and visits, but has been known to carry out some engagements independently. When Charles becomes King, she is expected to take the title of Princess Consort.
              • Famous for: Camilla was for a long time a controversial figure. She had met Prince Charles in 1970, but was married to another man - Army officer Andrew Parker Bowles - between 1973 and 1995. Charles was said to have wanted to marry Camilla prior to this, but the pair were deemed an unsuitable match by royal courtiers. They then embarked on a widely publicised affair, which Charles' first wife Diana blamed for the breakdown of their marriage. Until she wed Charles in 2005, she remained a deeply divisive figure in British public life.

                • Royal duties: Like his brother William, Harry carries out official visits on behalf of the Queen and is patron of a number of charities. He is the youngest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
                • Famous for: Unlike his brother, Harry enschewed university education in favour of following a military career, and served on the front line in Afghanistan for 77 days. Prior to this, he had gained a reputation for his rebellious antics and was labelled a 'wild child' by the British tabloid press. He has been forced to apologise for his behaviour on a number of occasions, such as when he was photographed dressed in Nazi uniform at a fancy dress party and after he was recorded making a racist remark to a British-Pakistani soldier while on duty with the army.
