Google Buys TheDealMap for Location-Based Deals

TheDealMap (Full)Google has purchased TheDealMap, a location-based deals service that will almost certainly be integrated into Googe's recent Deals service.
TheDealMap, which happened to be one of PCMag.com's best Web sites of 2010, rounds up local deals via an online map, and also separates them out via category. Users can also find deals by brand or by city, as well as via categories such as "restaurants," "medical," and "food and drugs," among others.
Google recently launched its Google Offers program in Portland, Ore., and later moving to New York's Manhattan and the San Francisco Bay Area. Like Groupon and other daily deals sites, Google Offers focuses on offers in a specific region, generally offering users the right to purchase a deal coupon for 50 percent off or more.
To date, though, Google's Offers beta places deals in a generic region, such as New York's MidTown, or "Oakland/East Bay". With TheDealMap, deals can be found outside those regions, with a much more refined sense of location. Google's strength in its Maps offering, with its Google Places becoming more of a home for businesses.
And Groupon recently launched Groupon Now, which provides location-based deals with time constraints as well, one-upping its competition.
"We believe Google provides the ideal platform to help us accelerate our growth and fulfill our mission. We're passionate about helping people save money while having great local experiences, and in Google we've found the perfect partner that shares this passion, as well as our vision and strategy," the company said in a statement posted on its site. "We believe that joining Google will help us innovate in new and unexplored areas of commerce."
It's unclear, however, how long TheDealMap will exist as a service.
"For the time being, we will continue to support The Dealmap's core products and partner services. People will still be able to access local and daily deals through The Dealmap website, mobile apps, and daily email, and we'll continue supporting The Dealmap API and feeds for existing sourcing and distribution partners. As we're ready to share more about integration and transition plans, we'll update our partners and consumers on progress and any news."
TheDealMap claims that it has over 2 million users of its branded mobile, Web, social, and email products, and that over 1 million people have installed its iPhone and Android apps. The site also claims over 85 million visitors have accessed its DealExchange distribution network.

iPad 3 to go Beyond HD

If you drooled over the HD resolution of the iPad 2 and thought that it couldn’t get any better then maybe the iPad 3 will make you eat your words, at least that’s what a report in The Korea Times claims. The report, in an affirmative tone stated that Apple will maintain the screen size to 9.7-inches and is all set to wrap up its full HD stint, as well as make way for better, higher-resolution screens, which one of our earlier reports claimed could go up to 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. That was, of course, just a rumor back then.

Beyond HD (Image credit: 9to5Mac.com)

The report further revealed that technology giants, LG and Samsung are very close to bagging the deal with Apple. Apple apparently is currently testing the samples of high-resolution LCD displays belonging to LG and Samsung at a lab in China. Those keenly following our reports on the Apple vs. Samsung saga would find it difficult to believe that Apple is looking at employing Samsung’s technology to its own. But, Samsung’s multi-faceted approach (its presence in the finished goods, as well as parts) to business makes its friendship more desirable.

However, reports also direct us to the fact that Apple has been known to keep its list of providers same for all versions, across all its product categories. Hence, Apple looking elsewhere for its needs seems unlikely.

Google Effect Affecting Your Memory: Reports

How many times have you turned to your faithful, ‘ever so right’ computer to find answers to the most basic questions, okay maybe, slightly trickier questions? If you find yourself turning in too often, then you may be suffering from the Google Effect. Well! That’s not us, but a report on the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) weekly journal,Science. According to the report drafted by the AAAS researchers, internet (symbolized by Google) is replacing people’s own bank of information – memory.

You have the Google Effect, too? (Image credit: androidauthority.com)

The research further revealed, and plunked a lot of blame on the hugely popular existence of ‘search engines’. In fact, a common observation would reveal that people are now replacing the word ‘search’, with ‘Google’. You now, usually ‘Google’ up something on the internet, instead of relying on your memory, or referring to a book. To better put their findings down, the researchers put a sample of individuals under a series of tests. The individuals were posed with a set of questions based on various themes, and were asked to type the answers to those on the given computer. It was found that when asked the same questions verbally, most of them couldn’t recollect the answers. Some stated that they didn’t find the need to recollect because they believed the answer to be stashed away in the computer.

However, there is a visible pattern noted, too. The ones who thought that the information they entered wouldn’t be retained in the systems for them to go back to, showed better retention capacities than those who presumed that the information is retained and hence, it was unnecessary to store the additional data on themselves. In a report in The Telegraph, according to the researcher, Betsy Sparrow also believes that the dawn of Internet didn’t deplete our memory reserves, only modified it. She added that people just believed more in stacking additional information on their computers, and just off loaded their own memory reserves.

Paid Version of uTorrent Coming Soon

The infamous files sharing application, uTorrent, is likely to be releasing with a paid variant. Less than a month after the release of uTorrent 3.0, BitTorrent, the program’s parent company revealed plans to introduce a paid upgrade for users called uTorrent Plus. With close to 100 million active users a month, uTorrent is without a doubt the most-used BitTorrent client. However, this new version is still in development and unavailable for the public. This paid program, uTorrent plus, will eliminate codec problems, convert file formats and move content between devices.

uTorrent Plus will be available as an invite-only beta before it will be made public. Jordan Berson, Director of Product Management for uTorrent told TorrentFreak that no price has been set for the program as of now, but it will include new features. Berson said that uTorrent is designed for users who are looking to find, get and play content anywhere on their device. The download will probably be free on uTorrent sites, but file sharing will come with a price. However, no plans include any anti-piracy features in it. You can visit the sign-up page for any additional information about uTorrent Plus.

Microsoft Hotmail to Block Simple Passwords

If you thought 123456 was a strong unhackable password, think again. Microsoft is going to stop users from using simple passwords. Hotmail, Microsoft’s free e-mail service is going to force users to use more comprehensive and complicated passwords. It’s just not simple sequence of alphabets and numbers, a lot of users tend to use short phrases and statements as passwords such as ‘ilovedogs’ or ‘ilovecats’. Microsoft feels that easy passwords are more vulnerable to brute force password hacks, where a program or individual is likely to use a list of commonly used passwords to gain access to your account. Once that happens, it’s very simple to change the password of that account. This new rule will be enforced soon and you’re likely to be asked by Microsoft to change your password if it’s deemed too simple.

Guidelines to ensure your password is strong enough

Looking at the large number of recent hacking incidents, there’s no telling who could be the next target. Microsoft is probably playing it safe by forcing users to change the way they set passwords. Microsoft even has an online page dedicated to passwords. There’s a list of guidelines on what a good password should contain and what are considered bad passwords. If you’re one of those who uses simple passwords, do give that page a read.

Flaw in Intel's 320-Series SSDs

Intel’s new 320-series SSDs seem to be having a peculiar problem. Now, here’s the trouble: In case of a power failure, the drive reverts from 600GB to an 8MB drive.

Several users have mentioned that under power failures, the drive loses all the data stored on it and converts it into an 8MB drive. This ‘8MB bug’ has recently been acknowledged by Intel. However, for now, those that have bought the drive have to be satisfied with the fact that, ‘Intel is aware of customer sightings on Intel SSD 320 series’ and can contact Intel representatives or Intel customer support. Unfortunately, Intel has not divulged whether the problem is actually a hardware problem or just a firmware issue and when it actually will be fixed.

Intel introduces buggy 320-series SSDs

According to a few preliminary reports, the drive tries to reconnect with the SATA port rather than go for a proper shutdown. Embarrassingly for Intel, this ‘8MB bug’ has infested the whole array of its 320 SSDs. However, their acknowledgement of this problem seems to be a step in the right direction.

You can find the official note here.

Have you faced any similar problem on Intel SSDs? Let us know in the comments sections below.

Adobe Flashes Flash 11 Beta

Adobe Flash is used across all platforms on the desktop, as well as mobiles. Adobe has released a new version of the runtime - 11 (Beta 1 11.0.1.60). The latest release is still in the Beta phase. There are a few additions to the new version. One of the key features is called Stage3D Accelerated Graphics Rendering, which basically uses hardware acceleration to render and power the graphics that you typically see in Flash applications. Technically, this should be possible on everything from mobile phones to desktops to smart TVs with compatible hardware. There’s also H.264/AVC video encoding, so video streams from cameras can be encoded in real time using the modern standard.

Fighting the HTML5 assault

Inefficiency has also been addressed in the new build. Better compression techniques and support for newer JPEG standards (JPEG-XR) are present. 64-bit support is also integrated in the new release. Adobe is claiming that Flash element files can be compressed upto 40 per cent of their original size. Resolution of images used in Flash are no longer limited to 16 megapixel resolutions either. Some of these improvements should also spill over into the new Adobe Air 3 release. Flash 11 builds for Windows, Mac OS and Linux can be downloaded here. 64-bit downloads are also available.

Roadmaps of Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Snapdragon Chips Leaked

Qualcomm has been powering several smartphones and not-so-smart phones with their Snapdragon SoC (system on chip) and they’re quite well known about it. The latest news doing the rounds is that their roadmap for 2012/2013 has been leaked and the future chips will support HSPA+ and LTE connectivity support.
Processors to be launched in
Processors to be launched in "Kraits"

According to sources, in the fourth quarter of 2011, Qualcomm is scheduled to release the MSM8960 dual-core processors that will clock somewhere between 1.5-1.7 GHz codenamed Krait. These chips will also feature an Adreno 225 GPU which supports DirectX 9.3.

Sometime around the third quarter of 2012, there’s a likelihood that the company will be manufacturing lower-end processors (hopefully it means cheaper mid-range smartphones) with the MSM8930 dual-core CPU clocking 1.0-1.2 GHz. Surprisingly the GPU it supports is the Adreno 305 which despite the name is actually slower than the Adreno 225.

Finally, in Q1 of 2013, Qualcomm will be launching MSM8974 quad-core processors clocking 2.0-2.5 GHz with support for 1080p video at 60fps and an Adreno 320 GPU.

So we can see a whole new generation of smart(er)phones wielding quad-core chips and better features.

AMD’s A8-3850 APU has an Unlocked Multiplier…But of no Real Use

If you stumble upon an A8-3850 APU overclocked to an absurd speed of say 7GHz on air cooling, don’t freak out. OCWorkbench have confirmed that AMD’s new A8-3850 APU may have an unlocked multiplier, but it offers no real world value. Raising it above its default 29x value will not give you any performance gain whatsoever.
Dont be fooled
( Dont be fooled)
This is a bit weird, since AMD should have locked it down in the first place, if it wasn’t of any use. Leaving the base clock (BClk) at the default 100, users can push the multiplier to achieve some pretty impressive numbers which look great in a CPU-Z screenshot if you want to brag about it to your friends. In order to see actual improvements, you have to increase the BClk, else the overclock is of no real use.

Linksys E4200 Wireless Dual Band Router

As most users are heading towards faster internet bandwidth, it looks like Wi-Fi routers are a requirement in almost every household that have more than one wireless device. Desktop PCs along with a notebook and a mobile phone or two are a common sight in most houses today. Cisco has been in the networking business for quite a while now and their Linksys routers are pretty famous, as well. The latest router we have for review here is the E4200.

Design and Build Quality
The router has a nice and sleek design and is quite light to carry around. This particular home router comes built with four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Next to these ports, there’s a power button and another for setting up the automated Wi-Fi protection setup. Also, there’s a USB port so you can plug your flash drive to read data from these devices. There’s the Cisco logo at the front of the router, which glows when it’s plugged in and gives it a cool look.
Well stocked in features
Well stocked in features

Features
First of all, the E4200 is a dual band router and has support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, simultaneously. The latter frequency can be used for getting a better throughput and faster streaming of media or for that matter even downloading stuff. While that’s good about this frequency band, most devices actually support 2.4 GHz. Apart from this, the router also has QoS which means that there’s prioritization for high-bandwidth tasks like streaming media and downloading content from the internet. In the options menu, you can explicitly select applications that are to be given a higher priority than others.

Not only that, the E4200 has quite a few filtering options. There are options to filter web access and you can block specific sites as well. Plus you can restrict internet access from devices and schedule when you want internet to be blocked completely. There’s an option for SPI Firewall protection. You can filter anonymous internet requests via the Internet Filter option and you can also block specific web formats like ActiveX or Java content.
Light in weight and a slim design
Light in weight and a slim design

Security settings are pretty much the standard stuff like setting WPA and WEP passphrases or even filtering particular MAC addresses that can access the internet. The router supports UPnP media server, so you can share content on the PS3, XBOX 360 or other UPnP-based devices. There’s support for third party firmware like DD-WRT so you can download it to tweak performances on the router.

Cisco has bundled an easy-to-use interface for those having a tough time installing a router. It’s pretty simple, precise and will let you setup the router in a matter of 5 minutes. The interface also has access to all settings that otherwise have to be accessed via the config page of the router.

Performance
We ran the E4200 through a set of benchmarks where we downloaded data in three different “zones”. The first zone was where the router and notebook were used in the same room. The other two zones were outside with a solid wall in between them. We transferred assorted and sequential file sets of 200MB and saw that when the laptop was in the same room as the router, it gave a speed of 3.51 MB/s for single and 3.58 MB/s for assorted files. Most other routers usually can give higher speeds (sometimes up to 6 MB/s) so in comparison, the E4200 wasn’t as impressive. We took the notebook to another room and saw the performance drop to 2.4 MB/s and 2.35 MB/s. As we went further it gradually decreased to 1.29 MB/s.
Ordinary performance
Ordinary performance

Streaming media wasn’t that bad in comparison. In all three cases, the video ran smoothly without any stutter or lag. We also played a video through an external hard drive plugged into the router and while it did perform well enough when the notebook was in the same room, we had a slight problem when taking it out. It took a little while to read content from the hard drive, but then it worked well.
Standard ports like most Wi-Fi routers
Standard ports like most Wi-Fi routers

Verdict
The E4200 is priced at Rs. 9,000. Pretty high for a standard router meant for home use. For users who are looking for simple routers for everyday use, this will fall out of their budget and isn't something that's starkly different from mainstream routers. Dual band routers are generally a little expensive and with the ability to support custom firmware, this might be a versatile router to consider

End of the Line For MS Office XP

Microsoft’s Office suite has come a long way. One of its oldest, most used versions, Office XP will be discontinued on the 11th of July, 2011. In doing this, Microsoft will no longer offer patches and updates to the aging office suite. Just last week, Microsoft released a service pack for their Office 2010 office suite. Users of Office XP received five years of support and another five years of extended support. Office XP was released in May 2001 and it’s been more than a decade since its launch.
Program continues to function, service updates halted
Program continues to function, service updates halted

Microsoft has stated that the version of Office will continue to function, but future updates won’t be available, and so they do not recommended using it. Microsoft also has been in the news for their new Office 365 web suite that's direct competition to the Google Docs Office suite. It’ll be interesting to see how many users actually move from Google Docs and the entire Google suite to Microsoft’s alternative. Most users, including large organisations have moved from their traditional mail services to Google. Those on tighter budgets are using Oracle’s OpenOffice suite.

The negative backlash against Apple's Final Cut Pro X includes complaints that Final Cut Pro 7 project files cannot be imported into Final Cut Pro X. Adobe, capitalizing on these complaints, is touting its ability to import Final Cut (any version) and Avid projects into Premiere Pro CS5. The latest version of Premiere Pro, like Final Cut Pro X is a 64-bit application. It also has enhanced meta data support, an optimized real time playback engine and native support for 4k or higher resolution files.

Apple in the meanwhile, is promising to bring improvements to Final Cut Pro X. They've already launched an FAQ (http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/) page for Final Cut Pro X. They're promising to bring better multicamera editing to the next big Final Cut Pro X update as well as releasing its API for XML support over the next few weeks.

Samsung Seeks Import Ban on Apple Products in U.S

Recently when a decision was announced regarding the infamous Samsung-Apple patent tussle, albeit in Apple’s favor; we thought that one of the most high-profile battles had come to an end. Well! We couldn’t have been more wrong!
...And, there they go again....!S
...And, there they go again....!

Yahoo! News reports that Samsung, the South Korea-based consumer electronics manufacturer has now approached the U.S. International Trade Commission to seek the imposition of a permanent import ban on Apple, thereby preventing the iPad manufacturer from importing Apple products into the U.S.

If you have been following all the updates on the Samsung-Apple patent tussle, then you’d know that the two technological majors had been, or rather still continue to be at loggerheads owing to a patent infringement issue. Although, according to a court directive, Apple did win, or so it seemed, the case, Samsung’s latest move clearly narrates another story.

Panda Global Protection 2011: All Round Protection!

Since the Internet is used on nearly every PC, there is always a threat of being infected by malware. Licensed anti-viruses offer the best protection to it. With the release of the latest version of Global Protection 2011, Panda seems to be making its mark on the industry.

The list just gets better!
The list just gets better!

Features
The Global Protection 2011 security suite features an antivirus, firewall, anti-spam protection, parental controls, identity protection, system optimization, backup, multimedia and gaming modes, network manager, file encryption and shredding, remote PC access and safe browsing. The installation of the security suite is pretty simple and so is the user interface.

Performance
The identity protection module is quite awesome; enabling the feature pops up a message asking you permissions for sending critical information such as username, passwords, bank account numbers, email addresses, PIN and credit card numbers over the Internet. This module is very useful for those using messenger applications. Phishing websites are also blocked depending on the sensitivity settings in the application.

Filter your kiddie's content
Filter your kiddie's content

The built-in anti-spam feature also works well. It is almost automated and can also be trained by the user for more accuracy. Parental control is not installed by default, but getting it there is a matter of a few seconds. Though the parental control is useful, configuring it can be a little tedious. Another brilliant add-on is the maintenance module, which allows you to wipe out crucial cached information such as IE history, cookies, temporary files, etc. Also included in the suite is a disk defragmenter and automatic backup feature. The antivirus suite also offers anti-spam and anti-id theft features. We did find the test PC slow down a miniscule amount due to the number modules occupying the system memory, but considering the protection it offers, it is worth the wait.

Verdict
The Panda Global Protection 2011 is priced at Rs.1, 299 (Single PC). Considering the expanse of protection it offers, which includes protection against virus, spams, as also lending parental controls, identity protection, system optimization, backup, multimedia and gaming modes, the price shouldn’t be a constraint.

Samsung Viewing Upcoming Designs is Harrassment: Apple

Samsung had previously asked Apple to show them their upcoming products in an attempt to make sure their future devices are not subjected to any potential infringement claims like the one Apple has currently filed against them. Apple has now filed a motion against Samsung in the District Court of California requesting a judge to deny the aforementioned request.
The ongoing battle between Samsung and Apple ...
The ongoing battle between Samsung and Apple ...

It is reported that Apple claims that Samsung’s request is not a good faith attempt to obtain information needed to defend against a preliminary injunction. Rather, it is a transparent and improper attempt to harass Apple by demanding extremely sensitive trade secrets that have no relevance to Apple's infringement claims or to Samsung's defenses to a preliminary injunction.

The document filed by Apple states that Samsung has made no display about Apple’s future products. Apple therefore has been claiming that Samsung's intentions to peek into its future designs is plain harassment.

The report ends by saying that a judge will make a decision on Samsung’s request to view Apple’s products on Friday.

Longest Lunar Eclipse in 11 Years Tonight

Tonight, the moon may not shine in all its exuberance. Tonight may not come for the next many years. The moon, tonight will get eclipsed when the earth will cast its enormous shadow on it, and embark a 100-minute long lunar eclipse.
Consumed by darkness..
Consumed by darkness..

The Total Lunar eclipse which the world, or at least a chosen few regions would witness tonight is the longest in nearly 11 years. The earth would begin casting its shadow on the moon, and for a period of 100 minutes, which in fact is the longest since July 2000. Natives of Eastern half of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Western Australia would witness this significant event. European natives will fail to catch the early stages of the eclipse, but the total eclipse would be a spectacle their side.
