Mobile Number Portability: Port of Distress?

The much awaited mobile number portability service was rolled out in January this year after a test launch in Haryana in November last year. According to a report from TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), by the end of February, about 38.33 lakh subscribers opted for the service. In a country with over 80 crore mobile subscribers, this is still a significant number. The service allows subscribers to change their service provider while retaining the same number. This is a big draw as many people who were dissatisfied with their service provider would previously grudgingly put up with it solely because they didn’t wish to change their number. With MNP, they can easily change their service provider without having to worry about changing their number.

Roadblocks
While the process seems quite simple, the execution is not without obstacles. People who have tried to port have faced a number of issues, leaving them in a lurch. Take, for instance, the case of Rajiv Patel, who ported from BSNL to Tata Indicom. He says, “I was not satisfied with BSNL mainly because of poor network. As I run a wholesale business, I didn’t want to change by number. So when MNP was launched, I decided to shift to Tata Indicom. Everything went fine; I even received the SMS informing me of the time and date when my number would be activated on Tata Indicom. But when that day arrived, I discovered that BSNL deactivated my number in the morning itself and there was nothing I could do but wait for Tata Indicom to activate my number. Thankfully, my number was activated sometime late in the night. However, the people who tried calling my number couldn’t reach me and were informed that this BSNL number has been temporarily disconnected. This continued for a week or two and finally after complaining, my issue was resolved. All in all, it was a nightmarish experience and I even lost some business as people could not reach me.”

Rajiv is not alone, as there many who faced similar predicament. Funnily enough, a few others found that their number was active on both service providers. Aditya Soni, who had a Reliance connection ported to Vodafone realized that his number was active in both places. The entire porting process in itself went smoothly other than this minor glitch, which he says went on for about a week. On the other hand, many users found their MNP request rejected due to various reasons, the most common being that they were part of special group plans. Another common ground for rejection was outstanding payment due at the existing provider.

While the scenario looks chaotic, not everyone faced issues with the porting process. Prateek Chakraverty, who had a BSNL connection and switched to Vodafone, says, “I had a BSNL connection and, as you can imagine, the network quality was pretty lousy. Hence, I decided to move to a private player. The MNP process for me took about 10 calendar days (8 business days). But, of course, it depends on the old network operator. If they choose to delay the process, it might take a while, which is 14-21 business days. There would be a "no service" window for about one hour before your number is ported to the new network operator, about which you will be informed well in advance.”
Is it worth the hassel? Or is it Hassel-Free
Is it worth the hassle? Or is it Hassle-Free

Freebies
With MNP, the power is finally in the hands of the consumer. If they are not satisfied with the service, talk plans, network, etc., they can switch to a different service without having to worry about changing numbers. On the other hand, in this highly competitive market, the service providers are tripping over each other to come up with exciting offers in a bid to retain their customers and woo others. While some have waived off the Rs 19 MNP fees, others are offering free talk time, free SMS, and even a free SIM card. But nothing beats the free pizza offer! Many users simply sent the SMS without ever intending to switch services, just for the free pizza.

Where to Lodge Complaints?
Almost all the service providers have set up dedicated helplines for MNP, but the experience is similar to calling up their regular helpline. It’s no guarantee that you will be able to get through, and if you do, you’ll probably be put on hold while the executive tries to figure out what’s wrong. Seven out of ten times, you will be asked to go to the customer care outlets, where you have submitted your documents. Most of the issues should get resolved at this stage. If not, you can approach the nodal officer of your service provider with the docket number of your complaint.

You will find the contact details of the nodal officer on your service provider’s website or the TRAI website. As with anything new, there are teething problems that have come to light and TRAI, along with the major players, is keeping an eye on the situation and making amendments wherever required.

Things to keep in mind before porting
  • Porting can be done in the same service area only. Mobile numbers cannot be retained for another city.

  • There should be no outstanding payment with your existing service provider.

  • Maximum porting time is 7 days in most parts of the country, except for Jammu & Kashmir.

  • Disruption time while switching off service providers cannot exceed two hours and happens during the night.

  • You will have to wait for a period of 90 days before you can switch again.

Looking at the specifications, the M-410 looks like a strong contender to the Galaxy Ace with a bigger touchscreen with better resolution, an HDMI port, a faster processor and is priced in the same range. The only one thing we don’t know for sure is whether the Mi-410 can be upgraded to Gingerbread – something that the Galaxy Ace has. Anyway, stay tuned for a full-fledged review on the Mi-410.

The second major announcement is the AF212 which according to Airphone is capable of a 75 day battery life thanks to its rather large 3300mAh battery. RIM PlayBook All Hat And No Cowboy

BYTE Wireless Radio and teamBYTE dig into the good, bad, and the ugly of RIM's new tablet.

We dedicated this week's BYTE Wireless Radio show to one topic: RIM's PlayBook tablet.
Fritz Nelson again joined hosts Craig Johnston and me on our regular 15-minute podcast, where we conducted a fierce post launch analysis of the product

Is this another example of what we at BYTE Wireless Radio call the Apple Tizzy Effect?Reviews of this product have been harsh, including Fritz' own assessment. The consensus is that RIM's tablet isn't ready for the enterprise--or much else.

2010 Threats: Why they happened and the tools available to thwart them.
Take a quick look back to prepare for future threats.
The PlayBook doesn't include native email or calendaring, the bridge software for it is slow and difficult to find through official channels. These are among the many flaws we discussed on the show--too numerous to mention here. It's not as if RIM didn't have time to get this right.
It's even more disappointing when you consider that RIM's BlackBerry phones are the gold standard in the enterprise. Craig, my co-host, a BYTE contributor, and IT veteran pointed out that the only hope for RIM is that IT will mandate the PlayBook for BlackBerry users because of intercompatibility, but even that seems unlikely.
Is there anything good about the RIM Tablet? Fritz pointed out that the PlayBook does have some outstanding features and on the show we delved into the things that RIM did right. The nice interface is one thing--it's gorgeous, actually. Yes, it's a rip-off of HP's WebOS, but that's a good thing; it means no more awkward BlackBerry-ish folder junk. Plus, it supports Flash and its performance is great. According to Fritz, web browsing, in particular, is outstanding.
But where are the apps? Fritz and Craig pronounced what's available for the PlayBook as largely junk, and that's putting it politely. Listen in to what they actually said. Shockingly, even the RIM trademark app in enterprise, its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), is missing.
Is there any hope for this pretty but befuddled late comer? I put that question to my seasoned team of BYTE editors and columnists, teamBYTE, which will be providing views and insights when BYTE launches in July.
"The hardware is wonderful, but the software appears rushed. Aside from the unique ability to connect to a BlackBerry over Bluetooth, it is missing many essential applications," said BYTE senior editor Seth Heringer, based in Pasadena, CA. "Does it currently compete with the iPad? No. Will it? Maybe. The tablet wars are just beginning."
Shawn Ingram, BYTE's senior editor based in New York, said he's torn: "I love the design of the OS, partially because it borrows so heavily from WebOS. But I've had the browser crash many times. I think if RIM can squash the bugs in what's it's calling a beta of the OS, it could do well.
"The device itself is really nice," Ingram added. "But I wouldn't consider buying one until there is a way to check email without using the browser. I'll probably just go back to my iPad 1."
Todd Ogasawara, BYTE's senior columnist for mobile and a government IT consultant in Honolulu, said the PlayBook "reminds me of the Palm Foleo. I tend to agree it will appeal to current BlackBerry phone users, but everyone else will buy an iPad or, maybe, an Android tablet. If (Barnes & Noble's) Nook Color becomes a full Android tablet out of the box with no rooting, it will be a serious player at the low-end," he said. There's gadget lust in those words.
Chris Spera, leader of the BYTE tips section and an IT consultant in Chicago, smacked it down. "Who are they kidding? Heck, even the native BlackBerry apps aren't finished yet," he said. "RIM is struggling to find a place in a mature market--and its initial offering is unfinished hardware, unfinished developer tools, and unfinished or missing PIM apps."
Eric Finkenbiner, senior BYTE commentator and a business analyst at JP Morgan Chase in Columbus, OH, said, "My users are going to ask for an iPad over this device." The restrictions are limiting, he added, noting that RIM is going to have to make some bold fixes or fall hard in the enterprise. "I'm seeing more and more people that I support looking for ways to get rid of their BlackBerry (devices) and instead use Android/iOS either via a company owned phone or a personal device."
I agree with Eric that users in the end are going to revolt and bring in what they want, and IT needs to deal with that. You are either on the horse, or the cowboy's taking off without you.
In all, teamBYTE was a lot tougher on the PlayBook than some readers have been. As a group, teamBYTE exhibited total vitriol at what they viewed as rushed work and poor value in the long-awaited Playbook.
By the end of this episode of BYTE Wireless Radio, Fritz, Craig and I had reached a verdict about whether you should buy this version of the PlayBook for you or your users. The answer was painfully clear. Sorry, RIM.

Mobiado, Aston Martin design new concept phone, CPT002

Be it a conventional smartphone with the ability to flip upside down or a concept phone, innovational structure and offbeat designs have been gaining ground in the handset realm. Blending together aesthetics of
design, advanced technology and software, Switzerland-based Mobiado has dished out the CPT002 concept phone. This creation has been sculpted by famous car designer Aston Martin to infuse elegance and expediency in an out-of-the-box fashion.

Boasting of a solid sapphire crystal, the phone has been carved out with a transparent capacitive touchscreen. The platinum-based peripheral architecture of the handset facilitates it to house thebattery, SIM card and other items in way such that a see-through look remains intact.
The influence of Aston Martin’s primary skills makes an appearance into this handset too since it can be employed for automatically unlocking car doors. The phone has also been engineered to connect directly with an automobile’s display even as it silently lies in users’ pockets or handbags.
Delivering an immersive social network experience, the GPS capability of the handset works with its software to offer varied services. The FourSquare app wheedles with the GPS system to not only locate users’ cars but also their friends via an integrated map. Besides, customers can update their Facebook and Twitter statuses throughcameras outfitted in the vehicle while apps like Airbag are of great use during emergency situations like an accident.
The CPT002 is being showcased at the ongoing world watch and jewelry show, BaselWorld 2011, held in Switzerland.
